Let's Party With Perennials

Monthly meeting of the Western Horticultural Society

Following on the heels of winter annuals and spring bulbs, perennials provide color, form, and texture for the rest of the year, especially during the summer months. In California, the selection of perennials is abundant but the key to success is how well they combine with each other and how well adapted they are to the site. Some form the backbone, others add drama, and a few can help focus the view. Lucy Tolmach plans to mix it up and share her experience with favorite old fashioned perennials, brand new introductions, and little-known natives which add beauty and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. She will also include Filoli tips for planning seasonal maintenance operations, digging the border, and dividing perennials. Lucy Tolmach has managed the gardens at Filoli since 1979.

Live-In Gardens in the North Bay, travel by bus

Gardens are said to reflect the spirit of a nation, the tenor of its time.

One of the strengths of American gardening these days is a willingness to experiment...
While the breaking of this new ground has been exhilarating, we need to remain mindful of the lessons and inspirations provided by treasures of the past.
