Steve Gunther
The El Molino Garden designed by Anthony Exter
SAVE THE DATE for the next Gardening Under Mediterranean Skies symposium, which will be held in the greater Pasadena area on Sept. 23 - 26, 2010. There is room for fun and charm and joy in the garden, and this symposium, titled Style & Whimsy in the Sustainable Garden, will be focused on the lighthearted side of gardening in harmony with our climate.

Steve Gerisher
The Cooper Garden designed by Steve Gerrsher
Nine speakers, including Jeffrey Bale (Beautiful Stonework for a Sustainable Garden), Steve Gerischer (Losing the Lawn), Patrick Anderson (Plants as Architecture), and Steve Brigham (Living Art: Attracting Birds and Butterflies to Your Garden), will address various ways to improve your garden. Bus tours to nine private gardens will demonstrate how personal and artistic a garden can be without necessarily breaking the bank and while following sustainable garden practices. Yes - it can be done, and we'll show you how!
September 23 will be a day for optional activities (for a separate fee), including tours, workshops and other events. That evening there will be a panel discussion (free for symposium attendees) on "The Science Behind a Sustainable Plant Palette," which will be co-sponsored by the Greater Los Angeles District of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD).
September 24-26 will each begin at the L. A. County Arboretum & Botanic Garden with three dynamic speakers, followed by an al fresco lunch. After this, attendees will board buses to three different gardens where there will be a tour and on-site talk by the garden owner(s) and/or designer.
Attendees may sign up for one, two or three lecture/tour days (there will be a discount for attending all 3 days). The symposium will also include plant vendors and book signings.
