Architecture & Gardens
Pre-conference bus tour
Thursday September 23rd at 08:15 am
Ayers Hall, L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic Garden
Pasadena has some of the most fascinating and architecturally
important buildings in California (and beyond), and we'll visit
some of them today. We begin with a special guided tour of a
National Historic Landmark: the Gamble House, an "outstanding
example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture," designed
in 1908 by Charles and Henry Greene. After this we'll visit the
recently renovated front garden (by landscape architect Gabriela
Yariv) of a Greene & Greene house (John Bakewell Phillips
House), recently featured in the L. A. Times. The plants are all
California natives and other low water plants, and the hardscape
pays homage to the home's heritage. An al fresco lunch awaits us
at another fascinating garden. Our next stop is at the 1946
Gainsburgh House by Lloyd Wright, Jr. We've been invited to tour
the house and the extensive garden of native plants surrounding it.
After this we tour a mid-century modern house with an extensive
collection of Japanese art and a stream running through the front
yard. It is nestled in a charming Asian-influenced garden and has a
breathtaking view of the Verdugo Hills. Finally, we'll tour a 1925
Spanish Colonial Revival house, with a large garden by Thomas
Batcheller Cox. The home boasts original fixtures and woodwork,
and the garden is a series of themed rooms, with numerous
fountains, a pond, and productive veggie beds.
