Native Gardens & Art
Pre-conference Bus Tour
Thursday September 23rd at 08:15 am
Ayers Hall, L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic Garden
We travel east of Pasadena for a day-long exploration of gardens
featuring California native plants and artwork. Our first stop is at
the enchanting Sam & Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and
Crafts, where their six-acre garden is a water-conserving model
landscape featuring unique combinations of California native plants
and other Mediterranean plant species. Sam Maloof was one of the
finest woodworkers of the 20th Century, and the home he built,
which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is a living
museum filled with his own creations and much art by other artists.
After a 2-hour tour of the house and gardens, we'll travel to the
Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden for an al fresco Mediterranean
buffet lunch. Following lunch we'll enjoy docent-led tours of this
86-acre treasure, the largest botanic garden dedicated exclusively to
California's native plants. Their excellent gift shop and nursery is
generously extending a 10% discount to our group. Our next three
stops will be to visit lovely gardens featuring California native and
mediterranean-climate plants, plus wonderful outdoor art, including
a child's paradise on a small city lot, and an old orchard.
