Anthony Exter
Tony is the owner of a landscape and product design firm in Los Angeles.
Although most of the firm's projects are in the LA area, he has designed
gardens from San Francisco to San Diego, with several east coast projects.
Without endorsing any one particular style, the firm focuses on a fresh,
contemporary aesthetic for both traditional and modern residences, using
state-of-the art sustainable practices appropriate for the site and its context.
They have worked on landscapes for historically significant homes designed
by Paul Williams, Jerrold Lomax and Whitney Smith. Tony is also involved
in academic research exploring the psychological benefits of personal
landscapes and their aesthetic connection to the natural environment. He
holds a BA in Architecture from the Univ. of Pennsylvania and a MA in
Landscape Architecture from California Polytechnic University. His designs
have been regularly featured in such publications as Garden Design, Sunset,
Elle Décor, and the Los Angeles Times. Most recently, one of his designs
(which we will tour on Friday and Saturday) was the cover feature for
Garden Design's first series of Green Awards.

The Modern Garden
Urban Stress Relief & Emotional Sustainability
Saturday September 25th at 10:15 am
Emotional sustainability...what a concept! This presentation
focuses primarily on the gardens of Anthony Exter and others that
feature contemporary forms in their design. Should designs
"copy" nature or be purposefully man-made in appearance? The
visual simplicity in some patterns of nature are used as inspiration
in gardens that seek to provide calm, relaxing and meditative
escape from many of the stressful aspects of urban living. We are
Twittered, Facebooked and multitasked to the point of exhaustion.
Big city sprawl is condensed into the intense density of bumper to
bumper freeways. After a review of each garden for traditional and
state-of-the-art techniques of resource conservation, Anthony
Exter will explore the visual components of simplicity, humor, and
lightness in the garden that may contribute to our emotional well
being and sustainability.
