Steve Gerischer

An award-winning landscape designer, teacher, and current president of the
Southern California Horticultural Society, Steve has been gardening locally
since childhood. He has appeared on HGTV's Landscaper's Challenge
(where his was the design chosen and installed) and formerly worked and
lectured at Smith & Hawken in Beverly Hills, and Hortus, in Pasadena. He
now divides his time between creating landscapes with his company,
Larkspur Garden Design, and lecturing on a wide variety of topics relating
to gardening in Southern California. Current motto: "Get rid of the lawn."

Losing the Lawn

Still cultivating turf and don't really know why? Do you feel a
twinge of guilt when the automatic sprinklers go on early in the
morning? If you are considering reducing the size of your lawn, or
perhaps getting rid of it altogether, but just don't know where to
start, let's talk strategy. If you have already shut off the water and
are waiting for the grass to die on its own, perhaps you are ready
to tackle the design process. That list of reasons to ditch the lawn
keeps growing: water restrictions, limited return for resources
used, contributing to local pollution, lack of time, money, etc.; you
can add your own. How to start the process and what to put in
when the lawn is gone can be a daunting concept (but also really
exciting!). Learn how to finally get that Turf Monkey off your
back. Once the grass is dead the possibilities are endless...

Pre-conference Workshop

Steve Gerischer leads a super-fun, hands-on, messy activity for
grown-ups! Using cement, perlite and natural fibers, each
participant will make a relatively lightweight container that
resembles an old stone trough. All materials provided. Hypertufa,
a mixture of cement, perlite and coir fiber is a strong, relatively
lightweight material which can be used to create many different
garden projects; planting troughs, birdbaths, fountains, lanterns,
and even benches, walls, and stepping stones. Learn the "how to"
by creating a small pot or planter you will take home with you in
this fun and messy workshop--all materials and instructions will
be provided. Dress in your garden grubbies, and wear a hat.

FEE: $30; $5 of your fee will go to support Arlington Garden in Pasadena.
