How Low Can You Go?
Hows & Whys of Becoming Water-Wise
Wednesday February 3rd at 5:45 pm
Hood Room
For gardeners in the Pacific Northwest facing continuing above-normal summer temperatures, increasing water costs and a lingering poor economy, it makes sense to be water-wise. But how little water can you really use and still have a satisfactory garden. The answer, if you are willing to do the work up front, is almost none. Explore the hows and whys, learn about some amazingly generous plants, and rethink what you plant.
Speaker
Maurice Horn
Owner, Joy Creek Nursery, Portland
Maurice Horn is a passionate gardener who left a mainstream job to co-found Joy Creek Nursery, one of the nurseries at the forefront of the recent explosion of specialty nurseries in the Pacific Northwest. The nursery specializes in hardy perennials, shrubs and small trees. He is a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Clematis Society, now known as the Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection, and he served on the Council of the International Clematis Society. His work on clematis and other plants have been featured in Horticulture, the bulletin for the International Clematis Society, An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Clematis by Mary Toomey and Everett Leeds (Timber Press, 2001) and other publications. He is on the Great Plant Picks perennials committee. He is also a member of the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon and has worked with that society and Reed College to design and install a low-maintenance gravel border for the campus. He worked with the City of Portland and the Portland Park Bureau to develop a public site for the Brewster Rogerson Clematis Collection. Website - www.joycreek.com
