The Aesthetics of Sustainability

Visually Defining Our Gardening Expectations

Wednesday February 3rd at 3:00 pm
Hood Room

Using beautiful photography from his new book with John Greenlee, The American Meadow Garden, Saxon explores photography as a medium to define garden aesthetics.  Photographs in the media tend to define our expectations.  Words such as drought tolerant, xeriscaping and sustainable are bandied about and often used interchangeably.  But what does a sustainable garden look like?  And can a gardener who strives to create a sustainable garden also be rewarded with a garden that is also beautiful and functional?

Speaker

Saxon Holt

Professional garden photographer, American Meadow Garden

Saxon Holt is widely recognized as one of the top photographers in the world of garden photography. His images are in demand from publishers worldwide and he has worked for publications as diverse as Pacific Horticulture to Architectural Digest.  His collection of more than 200,000 images are available for licensing through his library, PhotoBotanic.com.  Books are his main interest and his current book, The American Meadow Garden (Timber Press, 2009) with John Greenlee looks at a changing aesthetic in gardening that is more sustainable and naturalistic.  His previous books, Hardy Succulents, with Gwen Kelaidis (Story Books, 2008), the award-winning Plants and Landscapes for Summer-Dry Climates (EBMUD, 2004) and Grasses (with Nancy Ondra, Story Publishing, 2002) all show a style of garden well suited to Western gardeners.  Over the past 20 years he has won awards for his magazine work, calendars, books and his portfolio, including four Garden Globe Awards from the Garden Writers of America.  He lives and gardens in Marin County and is currently working on a book exploring sustainability with Kate Frey.  Website: www.saxonholt.com
