We envision a resilient world dependent on the thoughtful cultivation of plants

A Western Azalea Resource Guide

Articles: A Western Azalea Resource Guide

As a companion to the articles by Roger Raiche, Richie Steffen, and Rick Peterson in the April 2010 issue of Pacific Horticulture, we offer the following resource guide to nurseries in the West Coast states that offer the Western azalea (Rhododendron occidentale) or some of its selections and hybrids. Slow to propagate, Western azaleas are rarely plentiful in nurseries, so be sure to contact the nursery before visiting to confirm that there will be Western azaleas available.

Some of the botanical gardens and arboreta from Northern California to Washington may offer Western azaleas at their periodic plant sales; the same is true of the many native plant society chapters throughout Northern California, Oregon, and Washington.

Visit the website of the Lake Wilderness Arboretum  to learn more about the current home of the collections established by Britt Smith and Frank Mossman, and visit www.smith-mossman.net for an extensive photographic library of Western azaleas.
