Leg Up To Rare Plants

Articles: Leg Up To Rare Plants

In Oregon’s Agate Desert, collecting seed from rare plants for distribution to nearby mitigation sites is a slow business. By law, only 10 percent of seed in protected areas can be collected, and not all of that seed germinates when placed at the mitigation site. The Oregon Department of Transportation is partnering with the J. Herbert Stone nursery to bulk up seed production of these desert plants under traditional nursery conditions. While some of the plants aren’t amenable to being manipulated in this way, several species are producing seed plentifully.
