Join Pacific Horticulture June 6-13, 2016 for a visit to two of British Columbia’s most dynamic cities—Victoria and Vancouver. Our tour begins in Vancouver with a private tour of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Next we’ll visit VanDusen Botanical Garden where we’ll enjoy a docent led tour by the garden’s curator through an elegant landscape featuring ecosystems ranging from the Himalayas to the Mediterranean, and from Louisiana swamps to the Pacific Northwest.

We’ll tour the richly planted 20-acre personal garden of Thomas Hobbs—florist, nurseryman, television personality, and the author of The Jewel Box Garden and Shocking Beauty—before moving on to Southland’s, Hobbs’ showcase nursery that Martha Stewart calls a “must see.” Rounding out the afternoon we’ll visit a couple of impressive English style private gardens replete with stone pathways, antiques, and a 400-year old Norman barn converted into a charming home.

On our third day in Vancouver landscape architect Chris McQuilkin will accompany us as we tour private gardens he has designed. We’ll wrap up the afternoon at Nitobe Memorial Garden, a traditional Japanese Tea and Stroll garden located at the University of British Columbia. Nitobe is considered to be the one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America and is among the top five Japanese gardens outside of Japan.

The next day, after a short ferry ride, our tour continues in Victoria where our visit begins with a visit to Butchart Gardens, one of the world’s premier floral show gardens and a visual delight. That evening we’ll gather for a presentation about the breadth and diversity of landscapes in Victoria by Allan Mandell. Allan is a professional garden photographer and a Victoria resident with a unique perspective on area gardens.

Allan continues as our guide the next day beginning with a stroll through Uplands Garry Oak Meadow and a tour of two innovative and impressive private gardens. We’ll end our day back in town at Government House where the many lovely gardens on the grounds should be at the height of bloom.

Our tour concludes with private town gardens including a collectors’ whimsical landscape and a multi-level townhouse garden pot-scaped with bonsai and dwarf trees and shrubs before a short drive along Beach Road takes us to the dramatic glaciated rocky slopes and gorgeous vistas of Abkhazi Gardens.

Scott Borden, PHS board member, will escort this tour.
